Studying at a German university
The full path from Lebanon to a German university — admission, documents, the blocked account, visa, and enrollment. Start at least six months before your intended travel date.
Step by step
Check admission requirements
1–2 weeksConfirm the language level (B2/C1 for German-taught programs, IELTS/TOEFL for English-taught) and whether your Lebanese baccalaureate is recognized or needs a Studienkolleg. Check each university individually.
Certify and translate your documents
2–4 weeksGet your baccalaureate and transcripts certified and officially translated into German or English by a sworn translator. Start early — this is a common bottleneck.
Apply to the university
4–6 weeksApply directly or through uni-assist where required (~€75 first university, €30 each additional). Processing takes 4–6 weeks, so apply well before the deadline.
Receive your admission letter (Zulassungsbescheid)
Varies by universityOnce admitted you receive the Zulassungsbescheid, which you need for the visa. Keep both digital and printed copies.
Open a blocked account (Sperrkonto)
1–2 weeksDeposit the required amount (≈€11,208 for 2024) with a provider such as Fintiba or Coracle. You may later withdraw about €934 per month.
Get health insurance
A few daysArrange German-recognized health insurance for the visa. Public providers are standard for students; some use travel insurance only for the initial entry period.
Book the embassy appointment (VFS Global Beirut)
3–6 months waitThe German embassy uses VFS Global. Slots fill very fast — book as early as possible, especially after summer. This wait is often the longest part of the process.
Submit your visa application
1 day (appointment)Attend the appointment with all originals and copies. The visa fee is €75. Double-check the document checklist beforehand; a missing paper means rebooking.
Receive your visa and book your flight
4–8 weeksDecisions usually take 4–8 weeks after the appointment. Do not book a flight until the visa is in your passport.
Register at the university (Immatrikulation)
First weeks after arrivalAfter arriving, complete enrollment, register your address (Anmeldung), and activate your student status. Do this within the first weeks of the semester.
You don't have to do this alone
