Studienkolleg (university preparatory year)
A Studienkolleg is required for Lebanese applicants whose baccalaureate average is below 12/20, who graduated from a technical or vocational institute, or who completed only one year at a Lebanese university. It is a one-year preparatory program taught in German, ending with the Feststellungsprüfung — after which you can apply to a German university. The visa is applied for directly at the German Embassy in Beirut.

Check whether you need a Studienkolleg
1–2 weeksFrom Lebanon, a Studienkolleg is typically required if: your baccalaureate average is below 12/20, you graduated from a technical or vocational institute (معهد فني), or you completed only your first year at a Lebanese university. Check the DAAD/anabin database and your target institution to confirm and to identify the right course type (T, M, W, G, or S) for your field.
Reach German level B1 minimum (B2 recommended)
6–12 monthsThe Studienkolleg is taught entirely in German. The minimum language level to apply is B1, though many institutions prefer B2 and the entrance exam (Aufnahmeprüfung) is demanding — aim for B2 if you can. Accepted certificates include Goethe B1/B2, telc B1/B2, TestDaF, DSH-1, or DSD. Study and certify at the Goethe-Institut in Beirut and keep the certificate.
Apply for a Studienkolleg place
4–6 weeksApply through your target university, uni-assist, or the Studienkolleg directly (whichever your university requires) for the right course type. Submit transcripts, your language certificate, passport, and CV before the deadline.
Pass the entrance exam (Aufnahmeprüfung)
VariesSit the Aufnahmeprüfung, held in German — it tests your German plus subject content (e.g. mathematics) for your chosen course. Passing secures your Studienkolleg place.
Certify and translate your documents
2–4 weeksYour baccalaureate must be legalized by the Lebanese Ministry of Foreign Affairs, then by VFS (on behalf of the German Embassy). After legalization, have it and your transcripts officially translated for the Studienkolleg admission and the visa file.
Open a blocked account (Sperrkonto)
1–2 weeksProve your living costs with a blocked account (currently ≈€11,904) via a provider such as Fintiba or Coracle. Confirm the exact amount that applies to your visa with the embassy.
Get health insurance
A few daysArrange German-recognized health insurance for the visa. Public student insurance is standard once you enroll.
Book your visa appointment (German Embassy Beirut)
3–6 months waitThe Studienkolleg is taught in German, so the visa is applied for directly at the German Embassy in Beirut — not through VFS Global. Book as early as possible; slots are limited. The fee is €75.
Submit your visa application
1 day (appointment)Attend with all originals and copies: Studienkolleg admission, blocked account proof, health insurance, and translations. If you do not yet have a Studienkolleg place, ask the embassy about a student-applicant visa (Visum zur Studienbewerbung).
Complete the year and pass the Feststellungsprüfung
~1 yearFinish the one-year Studienkolleg and pass the Feststellungsprüfung (FSP). With it, your qualification is recognized and you can apply to German universities in your subject area.
