German language course (Sprachkurs)
The Sprachkurs (language-course) visa is the route most Lebanese students actually take first. It is for an intensive German course in Germany and is applied for directly at the German Embassy in Beirut. Important: it is a language-course visa, not a study visa — plan your path to a university or Ausbildung deliberately, and confirm current requirements and amounts with the embassy.
Step by step
Enroll in an intensive German course (starts at B1)
2–4 weeksGet a written enrollment confirmation from a recognized German Sprachschule for an intensive course — these typically start at the B1 level (commonly at least 20 hours per week). Course fees are usually paid in advance, and this confirmation is the heart of the application.
Reach at least A2 in Lebanon first
VariesBefore you apply you generally need to have reached at least A2. Study and sit the exam at the Goethe-Institut in Beirut (or ösd "available in Saida, Beirut"), then enroll in a German Sprachschule whose course continues from B1. Keep your A2 certificate for the visa file.
Certify and translate your documents
2–4 weeksYour baccalaureate must be legalized by the Lebanese Ministry of Foreign Affairs, then by VFS (on behalf of the German Embassy), before translation. A minimum average of 12/20 is required. Then have all embassy-required documents officially translated (course confirmation, financial proof, and other supporting papers).
Prove your finances
1–2 weeksShow you can cover living costs and course fees for the visa, commonly via a blocked account (Sperrkonto). Confirm the exact amount that applies to a language-course visa with the embassy — do not assume it is identical to the student figure.
Get health insurance
A few daysArrange health insurance valid in Germany for the visa period. Some students use travel insurance for the initial entry, then switch after arrival.
Book your visa appointment (German Embassy Beirut)
3–6 months waitThe Sprachkurs visa is applied for directly at the German Embassy in Beirut — not through VFS Global. Book as early as possible; slots are limited and this wait is often the longest part of the process. The fee is €75.
Submit your visa application
1 day (appointment)Attend the appointment with all originals and copies: course confirmation, proof of funds, health insurance, and translations. Double-check the embassy checklist beforehand — a missing paper means rebooking.
